23rd Law Commission sanctioned for three years term by President Droupadi Murmu

President Droupadi Murmu has sanctioned the constitution of the 23rd Law Commission of India, which will serve from September 1, 2024, to August 31, 2027. The commission will comprise of a full-time Chairperson, four members, and additional ex-officio and part-time members. The commission’s role will be to review and recommend legal reforms to improve the Indian legal system. The term of the 22nd Law Commission ended on Saturday. The Commission had been functioning without a chairman for several months after Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Chairman of the 22nd Law Commission, resigned following a 17-month tenure. Due to the absence of a chairman, several crucial reports, such as those on the Uniform Civil Code and simultaneous elections, were pending. Although the report on simultaneous elections is ready, it cannot be submitted to the Law Ministry due to procedural requirements involving the chairperson. Notably, there is no law or statute governing the functioning of the Law Commission. It is notified through an executive order or notification because it’s not a statutory body like the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) or the Lokpal. Instead, it performs a consultative role.
