Hindi is the most widely spoken language in India and the third most spoken language worldwide. Hindi Diwas is celebrated every year on September 14 to promote the language and its usage across the nation. The day commemorates the adoption of Hindi as the official language of the federal government by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. This year marks 75 years since the historic adoption.The history of Hindi Diwas dates back to 1949 when the Constituent Assembly of India made a historic decision to adopt Hindi as one of the official languages of the newly independent nation. The first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru decided to observe September 14 as Hindi Diwas. It also celebrates the birth anniversary of Beohar Rajendra Simha, a great scholar and Hindi poet. He also worked tirelessly towards making Hindi the official language of India.The first Hindi Diwas was officially celebrated on September 14, 1953. On this day, awards, including Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar and Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar are also given to ministries, departments, PSUs, nationalised banks, and citizens for their contribution to the promotion of the Hindi language. Several literary and cultural events are also organised in schools, colleges and other educational institutions to promote the Hindi language. Government departments and social organisations also organise various events on the day. The Hindi language is not just a medium of communication but also a symbol of cultural identity and national pride.
