The first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru decided to observe September 14 as Hindi Diwas. It also celebrates the birth anniversary of Beohar Rajendra Simha, a great scholar and Hindi poet. On this day, awards, including Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar and Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar are also given to ministries, departments, PSUs, nationalised banks, and citizens for their contribution to the promotion of the Hindi language. Several literary and cultural events are also organised in schools, colleges and other educational institutions to promote the Hindi language. Government departments and social organisations also organise various events on the day.
