International Literacy Day is celebrated on September 8 every year around the world. It emphasis to raise awareness about the significance of literacy as a fundamental human right and a matter of dignity. It aims to promote literacy and contribute to building a more literate and sustainable society. At its core, literacy refers to the ability to read, write, and comprehend information. Functional literacy, for example, encompasses the ability to apply reading and writing skills to solve problems, make informed decisions, and engage meaningfully in society. Similarly, digital literacy is the capacity to use technology effectively, and it has become an essential skill for navigating the modern world, particularly in the workplace and education. International Literacy Day was established by UNESCO on October 26, 1966, during its 14th General Conference. The first celebration took place in 1967. This day highlights the importance of literacy for individuals, communities, and society, as it plays a crucial role in fostering a well-educated and productive society. The theme for International Literacy Day 2024 is ‘Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace.” This theme highlights the significance of multilingualism in education, emphasising that promoting literacy in multiple languages fosters better communication, mutual understanding, and peace across cultures. The global celebration will be held by UNESCO on September 9 and 10 in Yaoundé, Cameroon. It will include a global conference and the award ceremony of the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes. Students can also contribute to the betterment of society by donating books to public libraries, adoption centres, donation centres or any other places where individuals from diverse backgrounds can access these books. World Literacy Day is a moment to reflect on the transformative power of education and literacy. It is a call to action for governments, organisations, and individuals to redouble efforts to make literacy accessible to everyone, irrespective of age, gender, or background. By ensuring literacy for all, we build a future that is inclusive, equitable, and sustainable.
