National Mathematics Day

The National Mathematics Day is observed on December 22 every year. The date December 22 is designated by Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2012. The year 2012 is celebrated as National Mathematics Year.
This day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of great Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. He was born on December 22, 1887 in Erode, Tamil Nadu to a Brahmin Iyengar family. At the age of 12, he gained the knowledge in Trignometry and at the age of 15, he obtained a copy of George Shoobridge Carr’s Synopsis of Elementary Results in Pure and Applied Mathematics.
His work areas are infinite series, continued fractions, number theory and mathematical analysis. He also made notable contributions like the hypergeometric series, the Riemann series, the elliptic integrals, the theory of divergent series, and the functional equations of the zeta function.
This day is celebrated to remember the renowned Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan and his contribution in the field of Mathematics. Remembrance of him and this day highlights the importance of Mathematics in today’s world and in other fields like science, economics, engineering and technology. This day is celebrated in various schools, colleges, universities and educational institutions.
