Teacher’s Day honours birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Every year, India celebrates Teachers’ Day on September 5 to mark the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India, who was also a teacher and a philosopher. He dedicated his life towards education and shaping up the youth of the country and his contributions in the field of education are exemplary.The first Teachers’ Day was observed on his 77th birthday in 1962. When his students wanted to celebrate his birthday, Dr. Radhakrishnan suggested that instead of honoring him, they celebrate all teachers. Radhakrishnan’s academic brilliance earned him 16 Nobel Prize nominations in Literature and 11 in Peace. He has also received numerous accolades, including a knighthood in 1931, the Bharat Ratna in 1954, and honorary membership in the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963. September 5th has been a day to recognize and appreciate teachers across the country for their invaluable contributions.This day aims to recognise and honour the contribution of our teachers.The teachers do not just confine their teachings to the classrooms and show us how to navigate through life with their teachings. They instill in us a strong value system. Their advice helps us to face challenging times. Teachers are the ones who chisel our talents and skills and make us want to be better versions of ourselves. Students prepare heartfelt cards, bring flowers and share a handmade note to their teachers to honour them and thank them. Some of the students even organise small events and performances to demonstrate their love and respect for their teachers.
