World Bamboo Day 2024

World Bamboo Day is celebrated on September 18 globally. It aims to raise awareness about bamboo’s numerous medicinal and practical uses. The World Bamboo Organisation (WBO) has taken steps to promote its conservation, sustainable use, and the protection of our environment. This day encourages its cultivation and traditional uses for community and economic development. Bamboo is known to be one of the most sustainable plants in the world. It requires minimal water, fertiliser, or pesticides and grows extraordinarily quickly—up to three feet in a single day at times. Because of these reasons, bamboo is considered a low-impact crop that doesn’t damage the environment when it is harvested frequently. It is utilised in creating musical instruments, artwork, and construction materials. World Bamboo Day was established on September 18, 2009, during the eighth World Bamboo Congress in Bangkok, with unanimous support from delegates representing nearly 100 countries. It was initiated by Kamesh Salam, former WBO President. On this day people from around the world gather together to share their passion for bamboo. Events include festivals, workshops, and webinars. Some communities also hold concerts with instruments made from bamboo.
