World Consumer Rights Day is observed every year on 15 March, 2024 . It highlights the rights of all consumers and protect them from exploitation, discrimination, and other forms of unfair practices.
This day aims to promote consumer awareness about important issues and campaigns and to encourage them to take action to protect their rights. World Consumer Rights Day also encourages people to know more about protecting their rights and ensuring that they can take measures for grievance redressal.
It encourages consumers to make informed choices, assert their rights, and demand fair treatment from businesses and governments.
The theme for World Consumer Rights Day 2024 has been selected by Consumers International as ‘Fair and responsible AI for consumers’. This theme highlights the rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the need to ensure a future where AI respects and upholds consumer rights.
The theme addresses concerns such as privacy violations, misinformation, and discriminatory practices that can arise from AI-driven platforms. It aims to prevent the spread of false information and the perpetuation of biases through AI systems.
World Consumer Rights Day was initiated by President John F. Kennedyon 15 March 1962, when President John F. Kennedy delivered a landmark speech to the U.S. Congress. In his speech, Kennedy outlined four fundamental consumer rights: the right to safety, the right to be informed, the right to choose, and the right to be heard. These principles laid the foundation for consumer protection movements worldwide. The first World Consumer Rights Day was observed in 1983.
The United Nations has recognized and endorsed World Consumer Rights Day on a global scale, and Consumers International has been running the campaign for 40 years, bringing the consumer movement together to celebrate as a group.
Basic Consumer Rights
Consumers have certain fundamental rights to safeguard their interests and seek redressal in case of grievances.
These include:
Right to Safety: Consumers have the right to be protected from hazardous products, with manufacturers and sellers adhering to safety standards and regulations.
Right to be Informed: Consumers can insist on receiving clear and accurate information about the products and services they purchase, including details like price, quality, expiration dates, and potential risks.
Right to Choose: Consumers have the right to freely choose from a variety of products and services offered at fair prices.
Right to be Heard: Consumers can voice their concerns and complaints regarding unsatisfactory products or services, and their grievances will be given proper consideration.
Right to Seek Redressal: If a consumer’s rights are violated, they have the right to seek compensation or a proper settlement.
Right to Consumer Education: Consumers have the right to acquire relevant knowledge and skills to make informed choices and protect themselves from unfair practices.
By celebrating World Consumer Rights Day, consumers are empowered to stand up for their rights, and businesses are encouraged to prioritize ethical practices, transparency, and consumer satisfaction.
