World Senior Citizen’s Day 2024

World Senior Citizen’s Day is dedicated to the senior citizens and is observed on August 21 every year across the world. World Senior Citizen’s Day was officially founded by Ronald Reagan, former President of the United States of America, after he had signed the Proclamation on August 19, 1988. On December 14, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed to observe 21 August as World Senior Citizens Day. This day is dedicated to celebrating the contributions, wisdom and experience of old adults in society. It serves as a reminder to show respect, care and gratitude for the seniors who have paved the way for future generations. According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report, by 2030, 1 in 6 people in the world will be aged 60 years or over. At this time the share of the population aged 60 years and over will increase from 1 billion in 2020 to 1.4 billion. By 2050, the world’s population of people aged 60 years and older will double (2.1 billion). The number of persons aged 80 years or older is expected to triple between 2020 and 2050 to reach 426 million. In his Presidential Proclamation, Ronald Regan said, “For all that they have achieved throughout their lives and for all that they continue to do, we owe our gratitude and sincere greetings to our senior citizens.” Many organizations work to assist elderly individuals who live alone, and they are always in need of volunteers. Visiting local adult care homes is another way to make a difference, especially for those seniors who may have lost their friends and family.
