Legend of Tamil film industry and founder of DMDK: Thiru Vijayakanth passed away

A legendary actor of Tamil film industry and a founder of DMDK Thiru Vijayakanth passed away at the age of 71 on Thursday, December 28 at Miot Hospital in Chennai. He was fondly known as ‘Captain’after his 100th hit flick ‘Captain Prabhakaran’ and was admitted to a hospital due to pneumonia. The actor tested positive for Covid-19 and was on ventilator support. He was admitted to the hospital in November for respiratory issues but was discharged a few weeks later. He made his last public appearance on December 14.
He is survived by his wife Premalatha and sons Shanmuga Pandian and Vijaya Prabhakaran. The actor won several awards, including the Filmfare award for ‘Amman Kovil Kizhakale’ in 1986 and Tamil Nadu Government’s award for ‘Senthoora Poove’ in 1988.
Vijayakanth founded Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazgam in 2005. In 2011, DMDK fought the elections in alliance with the AIADMK and contested 41 constituencies, winning 26. DMDK won more seats than the DMK in 2011 and emerged as the principal opposition party that year. Vijayakanth served as the leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly from 2011-2016.
Modi wrote on X, “Extremely saddened by the passing away of Thiru Vijayakanth Ji. A legend of the Tamil film world, his charismatic performances captured the hearts of millions. As a political leader, he was deeply committed to public service, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.”He added, “His passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill. He was a close friend and I fondly recall my interactions with him over the years. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, fans and numerous followers. Om Shanti.”
